There’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.
Taking your newborn out in the winter is definitely something we all have to do eventually, but with the right preparation, we can enjoy and stay active in the cold weather with our cute bundle of joy.
The key to protecting your baby from the elements is preparation. Even though knowing how to safely take the newest member of your family out in extremely low temperatures can be a little confusing at first, remember that if you’re cold, chances are your baby feels cold too. Whether the temperature dips to freezing or it’s in the triple digits, it’s all about layers that you can add or remove as needed.
As the weather cools, baby winter clothes become a necessity — infants and toddlers are less able to regulate their body temperatures, so they’re more vulnerable to cold weather. There’s much more to a protective baby dress in winter than simply throwing a baby jacket over a warm onesie and calling it a day. In fact, dressing a baby for winter temperatures requires extra planning and extra time, as well as special attention to cold hands, faces, and feet. The best winter baby clothing strategy is one that’s practiced and well-formulated so that parents feel comfortable taking little ones outside, whether that means a walk from a store to the car, some chilly sledding, or a long wait for public transportation.
No matter the reason you have to brave the cold with your baby, just make sure your baby is bundled up well. But always remember that you want your little one to be comfortable, not too hot or buried under heavy clothing.
The key is layering. Layers provide excellent insulation and can be added to or removed in order to find the right comfort level. Babies should have at least as many layers as their parents. Thin cotton clothes work well. A thin onesie, then a few long-sleeved shirts and pants. It’s always best to layer baby’s clothing, which traps heat between the layers. Starting with a thin sleeper onesie and then adding as needed- maybe a long-sleeved shirt and pants or even a snowsuit like these 3D Bear Ear Romper Jumpsuit is a good start if your little one is going to be in very cold temps. Crafted using only naturally-grown and high-quality organic cotton that is exceptionally soft, these romper winter suits are comfortable and breathable for your baby's ultra-sensitive skin, providing all-day comfort from sleeping to playing.
Make sure that your baby is completely covered from head-to-toe. If you need mittens, gloves, a hat, thick socks, and snow boots, make sure your baby is wearing them too. If you’re headed out in the stroller, you can use a blanket and/or his stroller’s rain cover as a plus-one layer; they can keep out the elements and keep in some heat.
