Don’t Worry, Mommy, I Kiss It!
That’s what my two year old daughter said to me after I hurt my hand. Besides touching my heart, it tickled me!
She was showing compassion towards me and trying help. But what she actually said was, “Don’t worry, Mommy, I tiss it!” She substituted the /t/ sound for the /k/ sound.
Now that is a completely age-appropriate speech error she made. Your baby and toddler will make speech errors while learning to talk. It’s part of the process!
But if your child’s speech is mostly or totally unintellgible by age 2, you might want to consider seeing a speech pathologist for an evaluation. By age 2 to 2.5 years of age, approximately 70% of your child’s talking should be intelligible or understood.
“You’re My Treasure Too, Mommy!”
Those were the words I heard as I closed my daughter’s door tonight after putting her to bed. Those are the kind of words that make all of this worthwhile!
Speaking of words, I came across a wonderful product the other day called LENA which stands for Language Environment Analysis! (www.lenababy.com)
Wow– this product is amazing! I encourage you to check out the website. It allows you to track the number of words you speak to your baby everyday. Did you know that the more you speak to your baby the better? And this product has the scientific research to prove it to you.
Please go check it out!
Happy Mother’s Day!
Here’s a hearty salute to all the Mothers in the world! You hear the saying all the time that being a mother is the hardest job in the world. You know what I think of that saying? It doesn’t even come close to adequately describing what it means to be a mommy.
There are times in life when words just simply fail to express the truth of something. I believe this is true in regard to being a mother. Being a mother requires the very essence of who we are as women. It requires a love, a vigilance, and a devotion that words do not capture.
So, again, here’s to all you mommies out there pouring your very heart and soul into your little ones. Happy Mother’s Day….
What’s My Name?
My two-year old daughter has recently started calling me ‘Mommy Jeff’ and my husband ‘Daddy Jeff’. I often wonder what people are thinking in the grocery store when my daughter cries out, “Look, Mommy Jeff!”
Let me explain…my daughter likes the Wiggles and her favorite wiggle is Jeff. I think she likes him best because he wears a purple shirt. For those of you who don’t know, the Wiggles are children’s entertainers who sing and dance and do any number of fun and silly things.
So, as odd as it is at times to be called ‘Mommy Jeff”, I know Grace is expressing her creativity by playing around with names. And I want to encourage creativity in my child and so do you!
Let your child’s imagination run wild and help them be creative by modeling it for them. Make up funny names or sing silly songs…it will build their creative thinking skills and besides that, it’s fun!
This is ‘Mommy Jeff’ signing off for today!
